FAQ

Q: Where are you located?

A: We are located in Monrovia, Indiana which is on the west side of the Indianapolis metro area. We are about 10 minutes west of the Indianapolis airport on I-70. We are even willing to meet buyers at the exit to make your trip faster.

Q: What is your price range for rabbits?

A: Our stock typically ranges from $40-100. The quality of the animal and the age of the animal factor into the pricing.

Q: Do you offer discounts?

A: Rabbits are priced based on the quality of the animal, not the person buying the animal. I feel that young or old alike, everyone deserves the chance to own nice rabbits at a fair price. We tend to price our animals more affordably than other breeders throughout the country that have comparable (or even lower) quality animals.  We consider that to be your already built in discount.

Q: What age rabbit is best for me?

A: For show purposes, a junior (under 6 months) is going to be the most competative. Even the best seniors have a hard time competing with a very flashy junior as this is when the breed is in its "show prime." Specifically, blacks tend to do the best on the show table. That being said, people tend to write off seniors too fast. They certainly can be shown and do well. Also, if your goal is to raise your own stock, a senior can be a great choice. At our rabbitry, if we keep a rabbit around until senior age, it is probably a spectacular rabbit and will be a wonderful choice for breeding.

Q: Do you sell rabbits as pets?

A: Yes, many people buy Tans with the intention of keeping them as pets. Feel free to inquire about the temperament and personality of any rabbit(s) we may have for sale.

Q: What does "registered," "grand champion" or "leg" mean?

A: This is a simplified answer, but a leg of grand championship is awarded to rabbits that win under certain criteria at ARBA sanctioned shows. Physically it is a small piece of paper that is a leg (or component) of the requirement for the rabbit to become a Grand Champion. Three legs and a handful of other requirements are then needed for a rabbit to officially become a Grand Champion with the ARBA. Please see the registration page for more information about registration.

Sales Policy

About Our Sales: We raise rabbits for the enjoyment and challenge of improving our breed and not to make money. We are very flexible and understanding and always strive to be helpful and honest. That being said, we have found that having a sales policy helps separate those that are truly committed to buying a rabbit from those interested in an impulse buy.

Our Rights: Since we are dealing with live animals, Blue Ribbon Rabbitry has the right to decline a sale to anyone we so choose or cancel any pending sale for any reason. If you have made any payments and we choose to cancel the sale any payments made will be refunded.

Holding: Rabbits are sold on a first come, first serve basis. We do our best to contact those on our waiting list before placing the rabbits on our website. However, we get a large number of inquiries and it can be difficult to sort through and remember what everyone is looking for, so we recommend you bookmark our sale page and return to it from time to time if you are interested in stock. You are more than welcome to come by our rabbitry while a rabbit is for sale and look at it and decide to buy it or place it on hold.

Placing a rabbit on hold: If you are not able to pick up a rabbit within a few days of the inquiry, but are very sure you do want to buy it, we can hold the rabbit(s) for you for a short period of time with a deposit. A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to hold rabbits for up to 2 weeks. The two week period begins as soon as you say you want the rabbit. You should send the deposit the same day or the next day. We will then "tenatively" hold the rabbit(s) for you for 2-3 days until we receive the deposit.  The only time we will hold rabbits longer than the two week period is if we agree to a specific, concrete pickup date before the deposit is paid. We do commonly hold rabbits longer is the pickup is for a specific show, especially national conventions. Please do not send your deposit until we have agreed upon a pickup date. If you send the deposit before a concrete date for pickup in set in stone
, the two week hold applies from the date of inquiry.

This deposit is applied to the total. The 50% deposit applies to each rabbit. For example, if you put a $50 deposit on two $50 rabbits and decide to only buy one, you still owe $25 on the one and will lose the $25 deposit on the other. This policy is intended to ensure we are only holding rabbits for people who truly are interested in buying them. The date and time for pickup must be prearranged prior to paying the deposit. Unless we have agreed to meet you at a specific show we are already attending, all rabbits must be picked up at our rabbitry in Monrovia, Indiana. We can even meet buyers at the exit to help make your trip faster. For those coming west on I-70, we can even meet you at the Plainfield exit if you would like which defintely will shave off some time for you.

If the rabbit(s) being held are not picked up within two weeks (or by the agreed upon date) the deposit will be lost and the rabbits will be listed for sale again. If there is a serious emergency situation and you are not able to make it, please notify us as well in advance as possible or immediately afterwards. We still will not be able to hold the rabbit indefinitely, but we can work out something. We are very flexible and understanding.

Payment types: Checks, cash or money orders are fine for deposits paid in advance. If you pay by check, keep in mind that the rabbit(s) will not be considered "on hold" until the check clears the bank.
If you are mailing money to us for a deposit using a method other than a check please send it so it requires a signature. Mail can get lost in transit and if that happens, money orders or cash cannot be canceled or traced like a check. We can also accept pay pal now for deposits or payments in full. We do have to charge a small fee to cover the cost of using paypal. So we do not even have to worry about possible bounced checks, we do require cash for final payments made the day the rabbit is going home with you.

Health Guarantee:  We have never had a health issue with any rabbit we have sold (and we have sold many over many years). We guarantee that all rabbits are in good health at the time of the sale. If an animal becomes sick within a 2 week period we will replace or refund the animal at our discretion with a letter from your veterinarian and return of the animal. We are not responsible for injuries or illnesses that occu
r after after the rabbit leaves our hands. If we feel the rabbit was in any way neglected we will not refund or replace the animal. You are responsible for returning the rabbit to our rabbitry and for any veterinary bills incurred. We have never had a rabbit with a health issue and feel confident that our health standards will ensure it never happens.

Checking over rabbits: We check every animal that we sell thoroughly for any disqualifications or other problems. We sincerely believe in being honest with this hobby. Selling a rabbit with a problem will reflect poorly upon us and of course we do not want that. However, you are responsible to check over the rabbit as well. We always check each rabbit one final time immediatly before meeting buyers.
Rabbits can pull teeth, break toenails, get white spots, etc. so it is possible something beyond our control may occur after they leave our rabbitry. It is important for you to check the rabbit over so if something does occur later you will know it happened after the rabbit left our barn. You should also check to make sure it is the right sex, variety, etc. If you need any help checking over the rabbit(s), please do not hesitate to ask. We will be more than happy to show you how to properly turn over a rabbit and check teeth, toenails, sex, etc.

Pedigrees: All show or breeding stock rabbits will come with a pedigree. Pets may or may not come with a pedigree, please ask first. If a rabbit is being sold as "breeding quality only" that will be denoted on the pedigree.

Name of Rabbit: All of our rabbits are named using our last name as a prefix plus a name we have already chosen for the rabbit. For example, "Bird/Flynn's Amy." Whatever name we have chosen must remain on the pedigree. It helps alleviate confusion in the event that multiple buyers were to use the same name. You may rename the rabbit whatever you would like for use as a personal name.

Ages: We do not sell rabbit less than 8-10 weeks. We give our rabbits at least a few weeks after weaning to ensure they adjust fully. Typically though, our Tans are not sold younger than 3-4 months. We like to give them time to develop and perform on the show table before being sold. For that reason we do not sell "babies," but we do have juniors (under six months) for sale often. Please note, on the rare occasion we do sell a rabbit younger than 3 months, we do not guarentee sex. After many years of breeding, we are almost always accurate on sex. It's rare we make a mistake. However, it can be more difficult to determine sex at ta young age. We strongely recommend you check the sex for yourself to double check us.

Senior qualities: If you are buying a junior we cannot guarantee senior weight or any other senior qualities. Proper diet, exercise and care should ensure the rabbit reaches all senior requirements. We will never sell a rabbit that we feel will not meet senior breed requirements. We will never sell you a rabbit out of parents that did not meet senior requirements. All of our breeding stock meets requirements to be registered with the ARBA.

Stud service and pre-bred does: We do not offer stud service. This prevents the spread of venereal diseases. We do not sell rabbits that are already bred.

Shipping: We can ship rabbits, but all shipping quotes and arrangements are the responsibility of the buyer. Preferably, I will meet you at a show if I am already planning to attend. We attend many shows in Indiana and some in Illinois and Ohio. We also attend most Tan Nationals and often attend the ARBA National Convention. You may also make a trip to our rabbitry in Monrovia, Indiana. If you are still interested in shipping, please ask us for a fact sheet.

Returns: We want every buyer to be happy with their purchase. But please know that all sales are final. You cannot buy a rabbit and then later change your mind and expect us to take the rabbit back and refund your money. If something is wrong with the rabbit, that is a different situation and we will deal with that per our health guarantee. In the past we have had people purchase rabbits for a specific fair or show and then try to return the rabbit when they no longer needed it. This mostly happened when we used to raise New Zealands and kids would need meat pens just for their fair show. It is not fair to the rabbits or us to do that. While all sales are final, if you decide that owning a rabbit is not for you we will take the rabbit back cage space pending. You will not be refunded money in such a case. I do not want any of our rabbits to end up in a shelter or released into the wild.

Please note: We do revise this sales policy from time to time. If you buy a rabbit, consider printing this sale policy out with a browser or printer time/date stamp so you know you have the version that was in effect when you purchased your rabbits. We will start archiving old versions in the future.
